"Meat Ball Rap II"

Capt. Charles Lane joined the 99th Fighter Squadron in Ramitelli, Italy, near Foggia. He was 19 when he piloted a P-51 in combat.

“It was a very fanciful airplane,” he recalled. “Speedy, maneuverable, extensive strike range. All those things a fighter jock needs — it had them.”

Lane was a wing man, meaning he protected “the shooters” whose wing he flew on.

He flew 26 missions escorting B-17s and B-24s on bombing runs. Escort missions took him as deep

as Berlin.
